There were no atheists in foxholes
My daddy always said.
They got religion pretty quick
As bombs burst overhead.
Americans of every faith
Have died to keep us free.
No matter how I pray to God
They made it safe for me.
At every public forum
Diversity is the norm.
Any type of blessing there
Should take a neutral form.
Only in the honoring
Of others right to choose
Do we honor all the memories
Of those we had to lose.
No government religion
Decides my choice of prayer.
I worship as my heart sees fit.
I choose the what and where.
So many died to make this so.
They fought the fatal fight.
I have gratitude to all of them
For giving me this right.
